An ogive is what you get when something has to move through resistance
The word is a piece of architecture, a piece of ordnance and a piece of aerospace engineering at the same time. In every one of those fields it names the same geometry doing the same job — a tapered, pointed profile that resolves a force pressing against it.
The letters came first. The name arrived afterward, and turned out to describe them more precisely than intended.
The pointed arch
The diagonal rib of a Gothic vault. The form likely originated in ancient India, was established as a structural principle in Islamic architecture by the 8th century, and reached Christian Europe in the 11th.
The nose of a bullet
Shaped to cut air resistance. The vocabulary is exact — secant ogive, tangent ogive, elliptical ogive, and the von Kármán ogive derived for supersonic flight.
The nose cone
The Space Shuttle external tank is the textbook example of ogive shaping at scale — the same curve, holding back the same physics, several million times larger.
Bands in the ice
Alternating light and dark stripes that form in a glacier below an icefall — ice recording, in bands, the season it was under stress.
Note the third term in the ballistics list. An elliptical ogive is generated from an ellipse rather than a circular arc. This alphabet was built from a tall ellipse before anyone went looking for a name for it.
One module, twenty-six answers
A single tall ellipse is the master. Arcs are taken from it, cut against horizontal bands, and closed to make every capital. The O is the ellipse. The C is the ellipse with a wedge removed and the terminals cut square. The A is the ellipse with a diagonal bar and no apex at all — there is no triangle anywhere in the alphabet. The Q takes a short straight tail that crosses the bottom stroke and stays inside the letter's width.
The consequence is that the counters — the enclosed white shapes — are lenses. They taper to a point top and bottom instead of curving through the way an oval does. That is the whole design in one sentence, and it is the thing that turns out to be rare.
We went looking for a typeface built this way. There isn't one.
Before committing to the design, the drawings were measured against every typeface we could reach — first by direct shape comparison against a local library, then through two independent commercial font-identification engines.

Both identification engines returned handwriting, comic and craft faces — the signature of an engine that cannot find a structural match and falls back on stroke weight alone. The one family that surfaced in both, Neuarc, is hand-drawn architectural lettering with round bowls and a conventional triangular A. It shares a hairline stroke with this design and nothing else.
Counter taper is the width of the enclosed shape near its top divided by its width at the middle. A rectangle scores near 1.0. An oval scores about 0.55. Across 2,064 measured typefaces the median was 0.69 and the fifth percentile was 0.61. Ogive Gothic measures 0.542.
A display face, and honest about it
This is not a text family and it will not pretend to be one. At small sizes the lens counters close up and the whole point is lost. Set it large and give it room.

Where a condensed font has to carry a headline in a narrow column and still be the loudest thing on the page.

About the name and the design
What is an ogive?
The roundly tapered end of a two- or three-dimensional object. In Gothic architecture it is the pointed arch and the diagonal rib of a vault. In ballistics it is the tapered nose of a bullet. In aerospace it is the profile of a nose cone. In glaciology it is a band of ice below an icefall. The etymology is genuinely contested — possibly the Arabic al-ġubb, possibly a Late Latin or Middle French term for a diagonal arch.
Why call it Gothic if it isn't blackletter?
Both readings are true, which is why the name works. In American type terminology Gothic has meant sans-serif since the nineteenth century — News Gothic, Franklin Gothic, Trade Gothic and Highway Gothic are all sans-serifs, and this is a monoline sans. In the architectural sense, the letters are built on the pointed Gothic arch. Read it either way and it is accurate.

What makes the letterforms unusual?
Every glyph derives from one tall ellipse, so the counters are lenses rather than ovals. Measured against 2,064 installed typefaces, that taper ranked at the 0.9th percentile — more pointed than roughly 99% of them. Two commercial identification engines covering another 1.43 million styles found nothing built the same way.
